DENVER COLORADO | BROWN PALACE | DONNE TEMPO | TOTO

The hotel's Swedish massage, administered in an unassuming room wrapped in pale stone, might be just what those tired muscles need. The staffers are both professional and polished, and the massage is a perfect way to chase the 9-to-5 blues. The masseuse first worked the upper body, gently probing for pressure points and places where the body collects tension.

She continually made sure the pressure wasn't too much, but she seemed to strike the perfect balance early on and maintained it throughout. Some massages include casual chatter between masseuse and client, but this rubdown was all motion and lotion.

It's likely the quickest 50 minutes one will experience, and it was hard not to feel a bit sad when it ended. If only every day could start out this way.

The masseuse said we might experience some mild soreness the next day, but that warning proved unnecessary.

The hotel's fitness center is, surprisingly, not state of the art. It's serviceable, nothing more. Given the sumptuous detail paid to every other part of the experience, it's the hotel's sole letdown.

Dining options are plentiful within the hotel, and guests can knock back a few cold ones in one of two bar settings.

The Churchill Bar isn't big, but cozy is the catchword here. Plush leather couches await visitors, as does a long, winding bar where the affable barkeeps pour top-shelf liquors.

The room feels like a library where conversation is King, and guests can either gaze out onto the city streets or look inward at the swirl of activity.

And while smoking one of the hotel's 60 different cigars is encouraged, the bar's ventilation system ensures smoke doesn’t obliterate the scene.

Brown Palace food

The hotel's shining glory may be its Sunday Champagne Brunch.

Held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Ellyngton's, the hotel's main dining hall, the brunch offers so much more than first-class champagne. Diners can feast on an array of breakfast, lunch and dessert options, from delicious tenderloin to made-to-order omelets. It all looks so lovely it feels criminal to disturb it with a serving spoon.

It's almost too much to take in at once, but the friendly, efficient staff will make you feel at ease. And every time you so much as leave your seat, a new napkin and refilled glass of champagne or orange juice will likely be there to greet you upon your return.

In case the sumptuous food presentations weren't enough, the brunch features an ornate ice sculpture created from scratch from local artists Fear

No Ice and a chocolate fountain.

And, of course, you can sample a number of Champagnes, including Domaine Chandon and Dom Perignon.

A delightful jazz combo sits near the room's center creates the ideal atmosphere for a festive dining treat.

And if you can't spend the night at the hotel but need a dash of elegance, you can always make a reservation for the brunch all the same.

We're told these extravagant brunches don't make much money for the hotel, and with the array of food and drink it's easy to see why.

Even the most luxury minded traveler might cry "Uncle!" But the sensation won't last long.

The Spa at the Brown Palace Hotel

By Jacquie Kubin

The bed may be heaven on earth. The sheets crisp and smooth. The complimentary slippers set perfectly, waiting for you to wake. Everything is perfect, from the front desk to the turn down service.

These are just some of the things that make a hotel a destination.

Brown Palace Spa
Another is a world-class spa. From its Romanesque entrance to luxury appointed treatment rooms and services, The Spa at The Brown Palace is one of Denver’s “must visit” destinations, where the hotels deep mineral spring waters and innovative therapies, essential oils and natural products are available to help you relax, refresh and reclaim your skin and souls health.

We sat Erin Johnston, Director of The Spa at The Brown Palace Hotel and asked her a few questions about the marvelous wonders of her spa.

What is the most popular service that guest’s request?

The Brown Palace Signature Massage. This massage is offered exclusively at The Brown Palace and is a blend of Swedish, Reflexology and deep tissue techniques combined with The Brown Palace signature blend of lemongrass and sage essentials oil.

How do you choose your Spa products?

We use Phytomer products, which is a marine based cosmetic line that was created in Saint-Malo, France. It was the first brand in the world to bring the virtues of the sea to modern skin care. All treatments for the restoring balance to the skin and body are founded on a thalassotherapy philosophy. We choose this line because Phytomer uses natural ingredients and it recognizes that maintaining a healthy environment is the key to preserving it for the future.

Tell me about the health benefits of the artesian well water in both the treatments and for drinking? Does it have a higher mineral content, where does it come from, why is clean water so important for our health?

Requiring no added purifiers, the sparkling spring water emerges from deep below the hotel’s foundation. A 720-foot well taps into this unique feature, naturally protecting the water’s mineral composition from any man-made impurities.

For those that travel, or live close to a quality hotel spa, what is the consumer looking for? What questions should she/he ask or information should he/she provides the spa technicians?

Consumers are looking for a spa that can cater to their every need or want. They want to relax and be pampered. They are looking for a spa to help them escape everyday stress and leave worries behind.

When going to a spa make sure to provide any medical history that may affect your service. Such as if you have diabetes, high blood pressure, if you’re pregnant or in the past have had a medical surgery. This information can help the therapist know more about you and your medical needs. In a massage let your therapist know what areas of your body you have been having problems with. When doing a facial let your therapist know what products you use and if you have sensitive skin. This way they can use the right products for your skin type.

Massage has benefits beyond “feeling good.” Why is it important for us to have regular massages, particularly as we age?

Regular massages are beneficial for any age because it can decrease anxiety, enhance sleep quality, increases energy, improves concentration, increases circulation, and can reduce fatigue.

What is your favorite Brown Palace Hotel and Spa service?

My favorite service is The Brown Palace Signature Facial - this luxurious treatment layers anti-aging ingredients, coupled with the application of cool firming masque and an anti-aging hand treatment to restore the natural radiance to mature skin. The specific massage softens lines and assists in the penetration of the marine actives that provide a virtual fountain of youth for the skin. I like this facial not only because it’s anti-aging but you can see a difference that same day and it is a great moisturizer for Denver’s dry climate.
