The Glenrothes Scotch - a gift with a twist

by Jacquie Kubin, editor

Father’s Day looms as does the question of what do you get a man that needs nothing? What can a daughter, or wife, find for that special man in their lives?

Can you really pick up another trendy shirt, or, gasp, tie or tool?

How about finding something for dad that is steeped in tradition, but that carries a trendy new twist making it very much about today.

Raindrops and Roses or Scotch and Soda --

My suggestion for this year is forget about what he needs and think about what he wants – simply remember a few of his favorite things…for example good drink, exciting sports action or a day of relaxation…and he won’t be feeling so bad!*

At the top of my list, I will be surprising dad with a bottle of something traditional and wholly unexpected - a bottle of The Glenrothes Scotch.

Whiskeys in general, and the earth friendly scotch whiskys ** in particular are gaining popularity as a leading drink choice and for very good reason.

A good Scotch whisky is complex, with a noticeable nose, or fragrance that is as important to the drink as the taste and flavors ranging from fruits and floral to vanilla and spice to the drinks finish, how it lingers on your tongue, its texture and feel in your mouth.

As is a good bottle of wine, Scotch as a drink is complex, but worth learning to enjoy and savor.

The Glenrothes vintages act as an agent provocateur, enticing those who don't have a pre-disposition toward Scotch to embrace the silken warmth of a drink best served neat, but also used in mixed drinks or with a simple splash of water or soda.

”It is true that the older the scotch, the more expensive that it is, the better it is,” said Robin Coupar, Senior Brand Manager, Malt Whisky, for Skyy. “When choosing a Scotch whiskey for dad, our suggestion is to give him something he hasn’t tried before such as The Glenrothes Single Malt.“

For my dad, I will be hunting for the elusive 1987 vintage, one that is no longer available from the maker but may be found in the market.

The process of creating a fine Scotch is steeped in traditions that are as old as the ages. With its bottle forward tasting notes, deep vanilla, citrus, fruit and/or spice flavors, learning about scotch, and choosing one that is pleasing to your palate is as much a journey as finding that favorite wine.
Tasting three The Glenrothes vintages -- the Select Reserve with note of ripe fruit, citrus, vanilla and a hint of spice, the 1991 a spicier vintage whose notes describe a bouquet with essences of berry fruits vanilla and white chocolate, teasing the palate with a mature softness filled with coconut, vanilla and butterscotch and the 1987 with citrus, orange zest and vanilla notes/

Personally, I will be on the lookout for that bottle of 1987 because I really enjoyed the crisp mineral finish of the drink and its softness on the palate, though if that can’t be found the 1985 with its bouquet of rich fruits and a soft palate with oak and vanilla and a medium sweet finish will be a Scotch to enjoy in the evening, with desert, or sitting around talking to my dad.

“Each vintage of The Glenrothes has its own unique personality and, as it is very much a boutique brand, each vintage is limited in supply,” Mr. Coupar says. “The 1987, which is now extinct, has a personality that is very citrus, deep Seville oranges, where the 1991 is filled with ripe fruits, vanilla and butterscotch. The vintages are different, each with their own distinct flavor and when shopping for a Single Malt Scotch, it is a good time to find a good liquor store with knowledgeable people eager to help you.”

* The whiskey category as a whole includes American, Canadian, Irish and Scotch brands, however only Scotch is referenced to as being a whisky, without the e.
