Artist interview: Jason T. Wright

The world is filled with artists. Some of them demand our attention. Jason Wright is an artist who demands our attention, whose passion for life speaks boldly from the panels on which he paints.

There is a depth in his landscape series that opens one to a new vision. There is a starkness, a visceral impact. Spend time listening to the artist talk about his life spent as a world wanderer, musician and athlete, and see the depth of the two-dimensional image.

Wright, who attended the Corcoran College of Art and Design here in D.C., is a student of the world.

For Wright, art is a full-time avocation, after having had a previous career as a sponsored, professional surfer and snowboarder.

He is also pursuing his role as a member of a CK2, a professional skydiving team — a passion that is now influencing his art in a series of paintings inspired by the night landscapes he has viewed while falling to the Earth.

Speaking with Wright over Skype, I found myself immersed in an interesting conversation with a young artist whose world and life experience, including a childhood spent traveling with a military family and the loss of his brother, have all influenced who he is, how he sees life and light and how his art path has developed from his first passion as an illustrator and mixed-media artist.

“I found myself wanting to go back to the basics, the old classics, the masters,” Wright said.  “Just paint and a brush, or paint and a knife. No tricks. I was tired of the tricks and the illusions to create the atmosphere and feel that I wanted.  To be simple again, almost the roots of an illustrator.”

It was an incredible opportunity to get to know Wright and view the series of paintings he has created.  I found them to be so impactful, and, aftering hearing Wright speak of them, I see so much more.

Learn more about Wright’s work and life, and get his contact information, at his website.

I hope you enjoy getting to know his art and personality as much as I did. And, I hope to be able to bring you more Skype interviews in the near future.
